The visit began with an introduction to the history and present-day operations of the mill, led by mill manager Kimmo Raita. However, the highlight—and perhaps the most interesting part—was the sawmill tour, where the students saw how large spruce logs were transformed into planks and boards.
One visitor remarked, “This is like a playground for wood.”
Indeed, the saw line with moving timber pieces brings to mind climbing frames and slides—perhaps even a roller coaster.
Pihlava sawmill and the local school share a long history. Today, in addition to visits, cooperation continues with the parents’ association. For example, last autumn the association handled the sales of Cutting Edge books at the open-house event and used the proceeds to purchase new floorball goals for Meri-Pori Comprehensive School. The sawmill also supplies raw material for woodcraft classes.
Thank you for the visit!
